Editor's Note:

Removing a 356 Engine

I've found a technique I like that Minimizes the Maximum height a 356/912 must be raised to drop the engine.

  1. After disconnecting all the Aforemention stuff Linus mentioned, and the Tach Cable on Mech Tach cars, simply slide a Floor Jack under the engine with a piece of wood or carpet to protect the drain plate parts.

  2. Jack the engine up ever so slightly and pull back on the Muffler. Engine should come out and off the main shaft.

  3. Lower the engine down onto the Innovative Solid Cellulous Lowering System of 2 x 4's or 4 x 4's.

  4. Remove Jack.

  5. With a long 2 x 4, play Archemedes and lift one side of the engine up as you (or someone else) removes a 2 X 4. Repeat until the engine is on the ground. (Or on a piece of cardboard that you thoughtfully placed on the ground before you slid the Jack in.)

  6. With the Floor Jack with some wood on the jack, Jack up the SIDE of the car at the location where the Trailing Arms meet the Torsion Tube.

  7. Pull engine out from the side.

  8. Lower car fully to ground on its wheels.

Installation is the reverse of the procedure.

KEEP THE 356 FAITH!!!
