The Maestro 356Talk Classic Posts

Editor's Note:

Harry Pellow, aka The Maestro, contributed a wealth of information to the 356 Registry Talk List. This is one in a series of his contributions, all informative and all written in his inimitable style, that we're publishing here in the 356 Registry site.

180MM VS. 200MM CLUTCHES

As it says in "The ABC's of Porsche Engines", the VW 180mm clutches don't last very long in 356 Porsches.

The REAL 356 Porsche 180mm Original Disk, have an expected life of 20,000-40,000 miles depending on the number of Teenagers in the family (or teenager-like adults).

200mm Porsche Disks have a life from 60,000-80,000 miles on average, and it IS possible to convert a 200mm 356C/SC or S-90 Flywheel to VW depth Specs and use a 200mm Clutch & Pressure Plate that WILL last a looong time and still mate with the VW-esque Throw Out Bearing you probably have in your 519 Transmission!

We do this conversion quite a bit on 356A's- it REALLY works well!

KEEP THE 356 FAITH!!!
Maestro
