Annotated Book List

Bill Block, 356 Registry Magazine Book Reviewer, has reviewed many of these books over the years -- and all comments are extracts from his reviews published in the magazine. Prices are not included as they can vary. Links to publishers' websites have been provided where known.

  • 356 Porsche Technical and Restoration Guide: Volume 2
Maltby, Gordon (Editor - Compiled from content contributed to the 356 Registry),
RPM Autobooks, 215 W. Myrtle St., Stillwater, MN 55082, (2004).

"It's the basic unfairness of life that I seem to have attacked many of these problems prior to the advent of the article or Volume 2. You, however, don't need to. Buy the book! I am repeatedly struck by how many of the topics covered here appeared within the last month on 356TALK - buy the book, before you ask questions!"

  • Buying, Driving and Enjoying the Porsche 356
    Schrager, J., RPM Autobooks, 215 W. Myrtle St., Stillwater, MN 55082, ISBN 0-9631726-2-X (2001).

"You really must buy this book. Jim Schrager, who writes the Market Watch column in the 356 Registry magazine, has literally created a new book genre. Unlike the Buyers Guides, which it superficially resembles, it does not attempt the impossible task of dividing all Porsches by five stars. Jim limits the book to 356's and does an excellent job of explaining why Speedsters, the cheapest body available when new, now command the highest prices. He carefully fits the other body styles into the greater scheme of things. Jim has clearly bought and sold many Porsches and almost all of his maxims and suggestions are backed up by actual experience."

  • The 356 Porsche: A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity (Rev. II)
Johnson, B., Beeman Jorgensen, Inc., 7510 Allisonville Road, Suite 116, Indianapolis, IN 46250, ISBN 0-929758-06-4 (various dates).

"Absolutely essential if you are restoring your 356. How were these cars really built? Keyed to the factory parts manual, the 356 is covered in sections: exterior, bumpers, trim and so on, with model and date related changes."

  • Porsche 356 Defined: A Pictorial Guide
Johnson, B., Beeman Jorgensen, Inc., 7510 Allisonville Road, Suite 116, Indianapolis, IN 46250, ISBN 0-929758-14-5 (1996).

"Also absolutely essential if you are restoring your 356. Printed on high class paper and most photographs are in very decent color."

  • Porsche 356 Performance Guide
    Spencer, D., RPM Autobooks, 215 W. Myrtle St., Stillwater, MN 55082, (2001).

"The successor to Spencer's "Handbook," his 356 Performance Guide is enlarged, expanded and updated with 30% more pages, more and better photos, better paper and information on the latest parts and technology available for the 356.

"356 Performance Guide represents a new paradigm and is essentially a new book... (it is) a necessary book for any 356 enthusiast and does an excellent job of providing the basis for performance modifications, ranging from rebuilding a motor with the current good stuff to a vintage racer. It's even inexpensive at $24.95

  • Porsche 356: Guide to Do-It-Yourself Restoration
Kellogg, Jim, Beeman Jorgensen, Inc., 7510 Allisonville Road, Suite 116, Indianapolis, IN 46250, ISBN 0-929758-23-4 (2004).

From the Introduction by Jim Kellogg:
"This book is about restoring a 356 Porsche to driver level condition. The focus will not to be spending time or money to create the perfect 356... A concours winning restoration is not the goal, but rather a restoration that will be correct, admired -- and driven."

  • Porsche Speedster: The Evolution of Porsche's Light-Weight Sports Car
    Thiriar, Dr. M.,
Beeman Jorgensen, Inc., 7510 Allisonville Road, Suite 115, Indianapolis, IN 46250, ISBN 0-929758-15-3 (1998).

"A steller book -- absolute must buy. Represents an immense amount of extraordinarily high class information. An excellent history of the development of the 540, 356A Speedsters, Convertible D, T5 and T6 Roadsters, as well as 911 and 964 Speedsters. The book also places them in the context of other Porsches and competing makes."

  • Porsche 356, Driving in its Purest Form
Conradt, D-M., Beeman Jorgensen, Inc., 7510 Allisonville Road, Suite 116, Indianapolis, IN 46250.

From the Introduction by Gordon Maltby:
"The finished product is a compilation of about 10 years worth of technical articles from 356 Registry Magazine, picking up where the first edition left off, beginning with volume 18-1."

    Bill Block comments:
"Another steller book. Well written, translated, and proofed by a team of 356 Registry members, this is an absolute muct buy for a 356 owner.Covers the early cars, particularly the Gmund and pre-A, in even great detail than did Ludvigsen in Excellence Was Expected."

  • Excellence Was Expected: The Complete History of the Sports & Racing Cars
Ludvigsen, K., Automobile Quarterly, ASIN 0915038099; (October 1989)

"The best single marque history, a veritable tome of almost 900 pages of which over half are devoted to the 356 and its contemporary racing cars. I was astounded that there was so much well-researched history -- including pre-356 -- and wondering if there would ever be the need for an additional book. In fact, on the 90% level, Excellence covers everything you need to know about 356 history."

    Editor's Note
"Excellence was Expected" has been out-of-print for several years now, but is available used for $200-$400. A new, updated edition is promised from Bentley, perhaps this year (2003).

  • The Complete Porsche 912 Guide
    Spencer, D., RPM Autobooks, 215 W. Myrtle St., Stillwater, MN 55082, (2002).

""The Complete Porsche 912 Guide" is organized identically the "356 Performance Handbook"... Some of the photographs, graphs and occasional paragraphs are identical to those in 356 Performance, but there is substantive new information - enough to make the motor section of the book useful to 356 owners who have already purchased 356 Performance.

"The chapter "High Performance Engine Assembly" includes new information on proper assembly of the 616 motor - information not in 356 Performance.

"And chapter 8, General Maintenance & Troubleshooting, is applicable to the 356 and is not found in 356 Performance. So figure for half the price of a remarkably inexpensive book, you are getting much expanded information on the 616 motor that is applicable to the 356. Further, if you have an early 912 or 911, the remainder of the book is about the only place you will find information on performance enhancements.

"Every book that (RPM) brings out has better black and white photographs than the previous one. "Complete 912" is not just better than 356 Performance, but is actually superb."

  • The ABC's of Porsche Engines
Pellow, H., HCP Research, 20655 Sunrise Drive, Cupertino, CA 95014, ISBN 0-941210-08-1 (1981).

"Takes you by the hand and almost turns the wrenches for you. Tells you how your engine came to be, even better how to improve it, better yet which of the improved parts will actually work with what you have. Don't rebuild a Porsche engine without ABC's and Secrets of the Inner Circle -- and don't hestitate to do it with them!"

  • Secrets of the Inner Circle
Pellow, H., HCP Research, 20655 Sunrise Drive, Cupertino, CA 95014, ISBN 0-941210-08-1 (1984 and later editions).

"Replaces the engine section of the factory shop manual."

  • The Maestro's Little Spec Book and Emergency Breakdown Procedures (Rev. 2)
Pellow, H., HCP Research, 20655 Sunrise Drive, Cupertino, CA 95014, ISBN 0-941210-09-x (1990).

  • Pre-A Electrical Schematics
  • A/T2A Electrical Schematics & Descriptions
  • T5 Electrical Schematics & Descriptions
  • T6 B/C Electric Schematics & Descriptions
  • T6 B/C Electric Circuit Descriptions & Descriptions
Leoni, J., 356 Electrics, 12745 West 61 Avenue, Arvada, CO 80004, no ISBN (1997), phone 303.431.5764 for the version for your car.

"Replaces the electrical section of the factory shop manual. Superb two volume book. Especially impressive are the schematics and explanations of devices, which on the factory wiring diagrams are empty boxes. Much like Brett Johnson's "356 Authenticity" series, Joe responds to criticisn and improves his books. Expensive, but these books are worth their weight in wiper motors when you need one."

  • Porsche 356 Technical and Restoration Guide
Beeman Jorgensen, Inc., 7510 Allisonville Road, Suite 116, Indianapolis, IN 46250, ISBN 0-929758-10-2 (1994), prepared by Members of the Porsche 356 Registry.

"An indispensable techie book, a compilation of the first 15 years of 356 Registry articles. There are very few new stupidities, so why repeat them? Indispensable and inexpensive -- buy it."

  • Porsche 356 & RS Spyders
    Maltby, G., Motorbooks International, ISBN 0-87938-551-0 (1991)

"A super book written by a knowledgeable Porsche enthusiast, showing superb research and marvelous period photographs. Avery useful vehicle for doing research -- or you can read it all afternoon without feeling like you have been studying."

  • Porsche Racing Milestones
    Thoms, H., RPM Autobooks, 215 W. Myrtle St., Stillwater, MN 55082, (2000).

"As you might expect from Hal's renown as a photographer, this is a marvelous picture book. ...The format of the book is about half history and half photographs, in turn split between Hal's own fabulous work - much from the 1998 Monterey Historics - and original period photographs, most of which I had not seen before. ...This is a must-buy book and reasonably priced at $39,95.

  • 356 Carrera: The Four-Cam Production Cars
Scrogham, C., Beeman Jorgensen, Inc., 7510 Allisonville Road, Suite 116, Indianapolis, IN 46250, ISBN 0-929758-13-7 (1996).

"An excellent book, well worth the price. Scrogham writes from his specific expertise; reflecting the research he has done on Carrera Speedster GTs and pushrod coupe GTs. He covers the pecularity of these cars completely. But this is also a weakness -- we are just not told enough about other Carreras.

Jenkinson, D., Osprey Publishing, Elms Court, Chapel Way, Botley, Oxford OX2 9LP, England, ISBN 1-85532-970-0 (1999).

"A book of no particular merit, except it reflects Jenkinson's extremely hard use of a 356 as he covered Grand Prix races on the Continent; clearly showing how tough a 356 was and how it could be repaired anywhere."

  • Porsche 356: 1948-1965 Photo Album
    Wyss, W., Iconografix, P.O. Box 446, Hudson, WI 54106, ISBN 1-882256-85-9 (1998).

"Clearly, Wyss knows little about Porsches, but Herr Parr from Porsche Archiv came up with some nice photographs. This is of some importance as the book is essentially a photo album with captions. But in this book, reading the captions will actually substract from your knowledge of Porsches."

  • Porsche 356 and 550: A Pictorial History
Rasmussen, H., Top Ten Publishing Co., 42 Digital Drive, Suite 5, Novato, CA 94949, ISBN 1-879301-03-2 (1992).

Sloniger, J., Motorbooks International, Post Office Box 2, 729 Prospect Avenue, Osceola, WI 54020, ISBN 0-87938-707-6 (1993), originally written by Dean Batchelor and revised).

"A superb job of tracing the development of Spyders and Carreras, but without the compulsive type and serial numbers."

  • Porsche Legends
Leffingwell, Motorbooks International, ISBN 0-681-21924-6 (1996)

"A mini-coffee table book, but is a must buy by virtue of its superb photographic studies linked with a unique and useful approach to providing a history. Leffingwell uses reminiscences of major players of the period, including Johnny von Neumann and Ernst Fuhrmann, keying each chapter to specific Porsche."
