| Here is my '57 Porsche 356A, #101163. It is a late Type 1 with the newer "cat eye" tailights and the older door handles. I know nothing about its prior life from its "birth" until I bought it in Nov.1973. The engine is a 1960 1600 S75 and the wheels are from '57, '59, '60, '62, '62. It does have all the original metal underneath but will need some rust repair eventually. It's not the rarest Porsche nor did it live a pampered life(before me), but I have enjoyed driving and working on it. After 30 years of ownership I'm still learning new things about it and constantly improving it.
In 1981 I removed three coats of paint (yellow on green on red) and gave it back its original "Light Ivory" color. I had the interior redone in brown Mercedes vinyl. Now I realize it should be red leather next time.
My latest project was replacing its worn-out VW steering box with a ZF unit I finally found. This is a somewhat more difficult job than just swapping out the boxes. Those tie rod ends are tough to remove when they've been on for 45 years!
I don't drive it as much now as I used to but I do like having it around. It was not that unusual to drive it for a while through the 70's and 80's and into the 90's, but it really gets noticed as a "classic" now.
