1957 Coupe / 1958 Speedster / 1960 Coupe

Ken Weidmann

The 1957 T1 was purchased by my uncle brand new back in 57. It is an early 57 which is painted a 1956 color and has the low overriders and 5 bolt door latch assembly. He had a 56 super that he had smashed the front end on. He pulled the super motor out and sold the 56 with the brand new 57 normal engine and put the super engine into the 57, which is still in the car today. He used it for his daily driver for many years putting roughly 140 miles per day on the car. In 1984 he bought a VW GTi and parked the coupe on the side of the house with some brake problems. It sat there for roughly 15 years before he gave it to me. In the picture of the coupe being put on the trailer, my uncle has the grey hair and is closer to the front of the trailer. It is in the process of being restored and I am hoping to have it back on the road by the end of the summer. It is metallic gun metal/bronze with dark red interior and oatmeal carpet.
The 1960 coupe was bought by my parents sometime in the 1970's. We know all of the owners with the exception of about 4 years in the mid 60's. The car was originally dark red, but was in a garage fire when it was fairly new. Throughout its life, it had been dark blue, light blue, 2 shades of red and when my parents bought it, it was the pea soup green that the pictures show (which is a Porsche factory color). It was stripped to bare metal last year and repainted Porsche Polar silver. The interior was in pretty good condition in black, but it is slowly being converted over to a more proper dark, dark blue. It only needs to be reassembled and will hopefully be back on the road early this summer. I have attached some digital pics of it just after it was color sanded.
The 1958 speedster was also my uncle's and he can be seen in most of the pictures loading onto the trailer to take it the 2 miles from his house to my parent's house. My uncle was the 3rd owner of the car, having bought it from his best friend, Herb. Herb had purchased it from Masterson Motors in Ventura and it was originally sold at Van Wyks in Santa Barbara. the original owner used to race it in Santa Barbara, and maybe elsewhere. It was originally baby blue, but he had repainted it white, shaved the speedster emblems, front bumper overriders and dash moldings. There also was an aftermarket fiberglass top for it. In the last year, we have redone the interior in the factory oatmeal carpet and black leather and as soon as the coupes are out of the paint shop, will be sending it to be stripped and repainted the factory baby blue with the correct moldings, bumpers and emblems.
These cars are great, and I can't wait to get mine finished. I only wish that my uncle was still around to enjoy it. He passed away early last year. He made me promise to take him for a ride as soon as I got the car done. He may not be there in person, but he will always be with me in spirit.
