This is “Bessie” my 1960 356B Super coupe, also
sometimes known as “The Masters Conveyance”. I bought her in
1965 in Tulsa, Ok from the original owner. She has over 400,000
miles on her so you can see we have been down the road a long
way together. Also, as you can see, she isn’t exactly as she
left Stuttgart in 60. Now don’t get me wrong, I think she was a
fine automobile when she left the factory and pretty much state
of the art. However, the engineer in me has always caused me to
want to improve on any mechanical contrivance and Bessie is no
exception. I will keep the list short in an effort not to bore
you. The engine started life as a normal and has been upgraded
to super specs with new pistons, cylinders, camshaft etc. I also
installed Weber 40 IDF carburetors and a Bursch tuned exhaust
system. She now sports 5 1/2” wheels as well as a Weltmeister
19mm front sway bar and Poly-graphite suspension bushings.
Inside I installed Recaro Trend seats. I’m 6’2 1/2” tall and the
original seats hit me about 3” below the shoulders which was
uncomfortable and very unsafe. It also has 4 point seat belts,
I’m kind of a safety nut. The exterior body modifications are
evident from the photos and were primarily done for esthetics.
Finally she is as rust free as a 1960 Porsche can be. When I
first got the car my friend, Ralph Twidwell, and I treated every
place we could find with rust preventive and I have continued
the practice over the years. I hope you enjoy the pictures as
much as I enjoy reading about and looking at other peoples
356’s.
