1964 C Coupe Outlaw

This 1964 365C has been "slightly" modified into a German hot rod - aka an Outlaw.

The vehicle, S/N 215815, was purchased in 1978 as a daily driver. It clocked 300,000 miles on the chassis and too many engines to admit to before being garaged in 1986. Always a classy vehicle but underpowered no matter how many CC's and how much cam and compression were added to the next rebuild.

In 2005, modifications were undertaken to install a 1979 3.3 liter 930 Porsche Turbo engine with SC cams and a 4-speed 930 transmission geared to be close ratio in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. 4th gear is stock and is used as overdrive. (The vehicle pushes to 110-MPH in 3rd.)

Because the intercooler would not fit within the confines of the engine compartment, it was removed and a 3-liter charging system took its place. A water/methanol injection system was installed to recover some of the power lost with the intercooler. (As of this writing, the vehicle has not been tested on a dynamometer so HP to the wheels is not known. A stock 1979 3.3-liter turbo is rated at 300-HP.)

In addition to fabrication and installation of a new sub-frame to hold the engine, transmission and coil over shocks, the stock torsion bar controlled spring plate was replaced with custom fabricated trailing arms. Braking is handled by oversize calipers, 911 cross-drilled rotors front, Wildwood calipers and cross-drilled rotors rear.

With exception of the 15X6 and 15X7 Fuchs wheels and their respective 205/60 and 225/50 tires, the exterior of the vehicle appears stock, save the headers, muffler and a piece of the turbocharger peaking out from under the rear body panel.

The interior was restored as close as practical to stock, save the 7-inches of back seat area needed to carry and house the shocks/coils, A/C evaporator, oil tank, water/methanol injection and ignition timing controllers.

Instruments were rebuilt/restored substituting a '65 electronic tachometer redlined at 6,500 and changing the face of the speedometer to 160-mph. The clock was replaced by a boost gage painted to match the standard gages. Behind the glove box door hide oil pressure, exhaust gas temperature and voltage gages.

So, the vehicle is no longer underpowered. One can fairly argue it's overpowered. And no, it won't go around corners very fast unless one is desirous of having an "off road" experience. And yes, it's really fun to drive!
