Shilling Our ex-nextdoor neighbors invited us to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1990 to attend the Fiesta Del Porsche. After looking at all the beautiful cars my wife said the fateful words: "Could you still work on them?" Her question refered to the fact that in 1967 I became a Porsche mechanic at a dealer which career lasted until 1971, I'm now a Sales Manger. As far as working on a 356, I told her I could, and still had most of my tools. Deciding to check out the market, I started to read the L.A. Times and found an ad that described a 1965 356C about a mile from my house. With the approval of my wife I decided to buy the car from the second owner as a retirement project. After a brake overhaul, new link pins, overhaul of the engine, rebuilding the carbs and a new windshield, it's on the road as a fine "driver". The photo looks better than the car up close. Ten years ago it had a front end accident and the body shop liked poor fits and bondo. I'm in my second semester of body shop class at Santa Monica College and sooner or later will get around to the body. In the meantime, the car runs really well and I'm having a great time meeting the Porsche guys at various events and answering such questions as I can on 356Talk. The Registry is a great service for both new and old 356 owners! Richard Shilling |
