I purchased my 1965 356C from European Collectables in June of
2002. From what I know, I am the second private owner. The car
was built very late in the 356 run on 5/23/65. It's VIN is
#222574. I think that #222580 was the last of the C coupes off
the line which would make my car 7th from the end. It was
originally purchased from the dealership owned by Jack McAfee in
Burbank, CA. As far as I can tell, the car has lived its entire
life in California.
It came with several options as listed on the COA and verified
by the original purchase agreement which I have. They include:
Trim Strips, Conti Tires, 2 headrests in leather (interesting
that the rest of the interior is not leather), Compensating
Spring, Koni Shock Absorbers, Velour Floor Mats, Blaupunkt Radio
'Frankfurt', 2 speakers, Antenna, and Chrome Wheels. I don't
have the headrests, but the hardware is still mounted on the
back of the seats. It retains it's original (rebuilt) motor
(#717886) and transmission(#86646).
Overall, the car is very original. It has had one re-spray and
from what I have been told, it is a excellent match of the
original special order color (Champagne Yellow). It does have a
couple of small rock chips, but no dings/dents. The chrome is
perfect and the rubber is very close to that. The interior is
completely original and in pretty good shape for 40 years of
use. The headliner is tear free, but has yellowed over time. The
seats are in very good shape and the dash is spotless. The
carpets and mats are worn in the usual places. All the
gauges/clock work and it drives like a champ. There is one thing
that I can't quite figure out for sure. The fan shroud is
painted black. Most all of the C's that I have seen have a grey
shroud. I have been told that black could be the original color,
but I am not sure I will ever know. Someone told me once that
they took delivery of their C at
the factory (#222568) and that it also has a black fan
shroud.....that convinced me to just leave it alone. After all,
why would anyone change the color of the fan shroud but leave
the rest of the car so original?
Having recently (9/04) entered fatherhood, my Porsche has taken
a back seat when it comes to my time. It is safely garaged, and
I try to give her as much attention as I can. Even if it is just
a quick dusting....
I was fortunate enough to have Harry Pellow give it the "once
over" and a tune up soon after I bought it. He seemed to like
the car and we spent a couple of hours shooting the bull in his
shop one day. It was great. Keep the Faith....
