1957 Porsche Speedster # 83561 Like many
Speedsters brought into California this one became a competition
car early in its existence. Its early competition career began
in autocrossing with Charlie Pistante of Hayward, CA who won
over 100 autocrosses, two Northern California championships and
consistently set top time of day for over 4 years. Its next
owner, Bob Tucknott of Castro Valley, CA first autocrossed it,
then made it into a Production racecar in the early 60's. Bob
changed the color from its original Meissen Blue to racing
orange. Over the next ten years Bob competed at most of the West
coast tracks from Riverside, CA to Kent, WA in E Production, one
of the most hotly contested classes of the time. Bob was a
consistent top five finisher against heavy competition and won
over 25 trophies. He raced under Harry Weber's banner for a
number of years and also was sponsored by Elgin's machine shop,
both legends in their era.
I bought the car in 1992 and vintage raced
it for several years. In 1999 we began a full-scale restoration.
While virtually rust free it had all of the dents and battle
scars of a car heavily raced, and much work was necessary to
resurrect it. With its long history we felt it should continue a
racecar, although streetable, and decided it qualified for the
special treatment of Rod and Gary Emory of Parts Obsolete.
With its windshield and hardtop in place it
is what a European racing Speedster was like in FIA
configuration. With its Spyder windscreen and tonneau it is an
SCCA production car of the late 50's/early 60's. The fairing is
a genuine Spyder and the front brakes are Spyder/GT from the
period. A myriad of additional details can be observed in the
vein of fun but period correct, in the true spirit of an Emory
Outlaw.
The restoration was completed in September
2002.
