My father first saw this car in early 1964 at Trans Ocean Motor
Co. In Pasadena, California. He was getting some work done on
his 1962 coupe and the owner of the new SC drove all the way up
from San Pedro for his regular oil and lube service. The
earliest record I have is 1-4-64 when the odometer read 2043
miles. The owner was Ernest Marhenke. He ordered the car in
1963 and picked it up in Germany where he drove it for a few
days. It was shipped over before the holidays. The wheels are
dated 9/63 and the car was built in late October. It was
delivered in Champaign Yellow with black interior, European
exhaust and a Becker Europa radio. The hub caps are the rare
flat C model without the Porsche crests.
As the story goes, my father told Mr. Marhenke that if he ever
wanted to sell it, "give me a call".
Sometime in 1966, the phone call came. Mr. Marhenke had
ordered a 911 and the SC had to go. My dad sold the blue coupe
to his buddy and drove down to San Pedro to pick up the yellow
SC. He drove it regularly during the rest of the 60's and early
70's. Sometime in the early 1970's the engine was rebuilt and
the outside of the car was repainted. From 1980 to 1990 the car
was in storage. In 1993 I got the car from my father and it
remained in my garage until 2001 when I decided to "fix it up".
Everything on the car was original except the front seats which
autos international re-did in 1993.
The motor was pulled and taken to Walt Watson at Competition
Engineering. Alex Bivens at West Coast House helped with the
cosmetics. We fixed some minor chips and dings, wet sanded the
paint to bring the color back, fixed some broken trim on the
front bumper and replaced the window rubber. While we had the
motor out we also re-sprayed the undercoating. The car has no
rust except for a couple small spots at the base of the driver
door.
Now that it is done my wife and I plan on driving it
occasionally and taking part in 356 events. The car has been in
my family for 40 years and somehow we managed to keep
everything! The toolkit was complete, the jack perfect, the
radio still works and the spare tire is still the original
continental. I even have the original title where the Fee's paid
were $2 !!
