1965 Coupe

George Mcmurty

This 65 coupe was purchased in Europe by a Lt Col. in the USAF while on duty in 1965. He drove it while in Germany and then brought it back to the US. There were four bull rings welded to the underside used as tie downs on the Atlantic voyage. He returned to Europe (Sweden) in the mid 70's and in 1975 took the ferry over to Germany and drove to the Porsche factory where the very last (new) replacement C engine was purchased and the engine swap done. I have all the paperwork from the factory showing this. The Lt. Col. wrote down this history and made sure to point out that the fan shroud on the replacement engine was black, not gray. "Don't change the color" was the instruction given to future owners. While in Sweden, the car (by law) had a right side rear view mirror and mud flaps installed. The Lt. Col. and the Porsche eventually returned to the US and the car was sold to someone in Pasadena, CA many years later. I am the third owner having purchased the 356 in Pasadena several years ago.

The bull rings and mud flaps are gone but the right side mirror remains and the car is restored to a full concours condition. It is presented in the original Irish Green with tan interior and all numbers match and everything is there (jack, tool kit, spare, owners manual, etc.).

I drive it on weekends, to many Porsche events and occasionally to work and it runs like it was just out of the factory. I have owned a 356 since 1969.
