1963 T6 Coupe – Beginning Restoration

The car belonged to my brother for 14-years, and it sat in his garage in NY. My brother has 10-kids and never found the time to fix the car. He said if by the time he reached 55-if the 356 has not finished he would send it out for restoration. Well, 55-came and went, so did 56 and 57. I think he had an estimate and thought the car was not worth repairing. So he went out and purchased a new BMW roadster in 2000. He was going to give the car to a charity when I found out what was going on and I told him I would take the car. We agreed upon a price (I did not see the car nor pictures). I arranged to have the car shipped to So. Cal and was surprised when the car arrived, it was a complete car except for a front bumper and radio and few other parts that most likely fell off during transport.

Just about one year later the car is mostly stripped, the only items that remain are the wire harness and the front suspension. For the past year I have been dissembling the car and refurbishing the parts as I take them off. There is considerable rust in on the underside but for the most part the top and rear of the body are in good shape. Several list members have encouraged me to complete the car while others in the restoration suggest I just go and buy a car. However, family influence has insisted that I restore the car which is exactly what I intend to do.

Some family donations have contributed to my decision. My brother-in-law has donated a rebuilt SC engine from a 1964 C Coupe. As other family members have contributed funds for proper tools. Thanks to the members of this valuable list my education of the 356-has allowed me the opportunity to understand and appreciate these wonderful cars, and bring a rusted heap back to life and bring a big smile to my brothers face (someday in the future).
