| I
picked up my 55 Speedster in '78 after foolishly selling my 55
Coupe in '74. The Speedster is still unrestored . The motor is
the early case with a big bore kit, 912 heads and Webers. This
car is a BLAST to drive!
I have had many memorable trips in the
Speedster. Once, I caught fire between LA and San Diego while
enroute to get temporary upholstery done in Tijuana. That
"temporary" upholstery is still in the car 20 years
later. I still laugh when I think of the school bus driver that
raced up along side me yelling out the open bus door, FIRE!
FIRE! I had no idea what he was talking about until I looked
over my shoulder and saw the flames torching out of the louvers
on my deck lid. The fire burnt the wire loom by the fire wall. I
got out some tape and remade the wires, then continued on my way
to the border. That's the last time I drove around without an
air cleaner on!
That is also the last time I serenaded
someone while wearing a big straw sombrero and a multi-colored
poncho; but that is another story.
My most memorable trip was going up Highway
One in California. I believe that was the most enjoyable trip I
have ever taken in the Speedster. I will try to do it again
someday! What a wonderful drive. Every corner was a delight! I
think every one should take their 356 on this road between Morro
Bay and Monterey.
