1958 356A Cabriolet

Jim Alton

On St. Valentine's Day (February 14th) 2004 I went to Las Vegas and dropped enough money to buy a small Porsche.  Here’s all I have to show for it.

These are older pictures—since these the fiberglass front bumper was replaced with one from Trevor’s Hammerworks. West Coast Classics (best known for VW restoration, including my bus) did the honors and re-stuffed the seats, too.  I sat a lot higher afterwards.

Shortly after getting the car home, I realized it occasionally smoked because the top ring in each piston was broken. I never figured out how it occasionally stopped smoking.  Fixing that and getting Rusty Bottoms to weld in new longitudinals made the car drive much better.  Victor Miles redid the steering wheel and interior rear view mirror.

I haven’t yet sent for a Certificate of Authenticity, but the engine, chassis and transmission numbers are all about the same proportion through their sequences.  The registry records (and some traces of old paint in the trunk) show that the car was originally ruby red with a tan interior.  It had American-style bumper overriders, too.
