HISTORIC
AND CLASSIC PHOTOS
|
Starting
on this page, we'll be hosting a set of bi-monthly photographs, roughly
co-inciding with the magazine publication. The purpose of the featured
photographs is to identify them as completely as possible for the owner,
and for 356 posterity and preservation. Use the email link below the photo
if you have pertinent information about anything you see in the photo beyond
what is already described.
Below are photos from
the collection of Jacques Mertens
of Belgium, each showing early Porsche racers.

This picture was taken at the
Liège-Rome-Liège rally that began on the 19th and ran to the
23rd of August, 1953. The car here is number 50, german licence plate W83-4079
with a 1286cc S engine. The roof has been lowered and the windsreen is now
in one part. Note the third wiper (ex Le Mans car) just above the hand of
the man leaning on the right (one of the pilots). The car finished 13th overall
and second in category. The drivers were Müller/Schellhaas. This lightweight
Gmünd SL today belongs to Mr. David Seeland in Collorado. |

This is the Sauter Car at the departure of the 1951
Liège-Rome-Liège Rally in "La cour des Princes-Evêques"
. The car has the start number 19 and the licence plate starting with W (who
know the other figures?). This car is made in steel (who knows the chassis
number?). Interesting features are windscreen wipers--which must be useless--as
well as the two hood straps that hold the front bonnet. The head lamps are
protected and the car is fitted with the Porsche script. The pilot with the
white hairs is Paul von Guilleaume who is driving the Gmünd SL number
33, the other pilot is Mr. Sauter or his co-pilot Mr. Rath. (who can recognize
them ?). The actual owner of this car is Mr. Ray
Knight. |

Car:
Gmünd SL, chassis number 356/2-061, licence plate 937.667.
Liège-Rome-Liège rally winner in 1952 with licence plate 1211.
Picture taken at the "8ème Rallye Evian-Mont Blanc-Megève (F)"
held on 28 july 1954 to 1 August 1954 (last race of the car). Driven by Olivier
Gendebien and Gilberte Thirion ( both pictured) as co-drivers. Car finished
4th Overall and first in category (to 1500cc). The car has a mid engine
configuration. |

Car:
550 Spyder (or Glöckler-Porsche roadster?), License plate SG-17508.
Driver Richard von Frankenberg (pictured) at the start of the 12 heures
d'Hyères 1954. Note the small signals mounted well inboard, the diminutive
grille, and the very low windscreen with side pillars. These are differences
from a typical 550 which indicate it may be a Glöckler/Weidenhausen
model predating the factory 550 design. It may therefore be a 1951 or 1952
car. There were other manufacturers of pre-factory "spyders". Does anyone
know the color of the car in this photo? |
